Cinderella with Anastasia and Drizella in Anguish

Description

"And when her wedding with the Prince was appointed to be held the false sisters came, hoping to curry favor, and to take part in the festivities. So as the bridal procession went to the church, the eldest walked on the right side and the younger on the left, and the pigeons picked out an eye of each of them. And as they returned the elder was on the left side and the younger one on the right, and the pigeons picked out the other eye of each of them. And so they were condemned to go blind for the rest of their days because of their wickedness and falsehood."

I was commissioned by my sister to create illustrations for a book she is designing. She decided to put 6 Hans Christian Anderson/Grimm's Brother fairy tales together into a book with 2 illustrations per story. The idea she had was to see the famous and beloved Disney characters put into their original, graphic stories that are not so well known. It was quite fun, and I'm super excited to see the finished print!

All images were done with Prismacolor pencils on toned paper (~9x12 in) with some Photoshop gradient work in the background (if applicable).

Hurt feet and now no eyeballs...it must take a lot of self power on Ella's part to keep from being phased (as the Disney one had such a kind heart).

There is also a book called Black Pearl that also has a darker touch to many well known tales (well for some, others are just sad). The Cinderella in that book (it is actually from the Prince's POV) is very...different upon being made a Princess (and that is partially the fault of her mother-in-law). She condemns her stepmother and stepsisters to beheading, but the Prince refuses until she claims that she will die...

I didn't like her in it at all...kind of wish to see how it would have ended because the Prince took a mistress in the form of a milkmaid. But this is nice and I wish her luck on the book (if it is not finished yet).
